Battleborn First Impression: Gearbox’s Innovative Hero Shooter
Our hands-on preview of Gearbox Software’s Battleborn at Gamescom was thoroughly impressive. As a team-based first-person shooter designed with console players in mind, it delivers an exhilarating, action-packed experience that offers a fresh take on the competitive hero shooter genre.
A Diverse Hero Roster & Unique Gameplay Mechanics
Battleborn, the innovative hero shooter from the creators of Borderlands, skillfully blends familiar FPS combat with fresh strategic mechanics. This co-op FPS boasts a diverse cast of 25 distinct heroes, each featuring unique abilities and playstyles tailored for various combat roles.
During our Gamescom preview, we started with Oscar Mike, a standard rifle-wielding soldier. However, the roster quickly expands into more imaginative territory, including characters like:
- Rath: A swift, katana-wielding warrior specializing in lethal close-quarters combat.
- Orendi: An “unhinged chaos witch” capable of unleashing massive elemental destruction.
The memorable designs of teammates like Rath and Orendi stood out immediately, highlighting the game’s immersive quality. Even Oscar Mike surprised us with tactical abilities like an invisibility cloak and devastating airstrikes.
Intuitive Controls & High Accessibility for Console Gamers
One area where Battleborn truly shines is its control scheme. During our Xbox One session, we mastered character abilities and navigated the battlefield with ease. This intuitive design is a refreshing change from titles that often require steep learning curves.
Furthermore, the game provides a truly seamless experience. Every action is accompanied by vibrant, brightly animated visuals and clear on-screen cues that guide players through the chaos. This commitment to accessibility ensures Battleborn delivers pure, engaging gameplay for both veterans and newcomers alike.
Seamless MOBA Elements Integrated into the FPS Experience
While many players are initially skeptical about integrating MOBA elements into an FPS, Gearbox Software has masterfully bridged this gap. Traditional MOBAs often struggle on consoles due to complex inputs, but Battleborn’s hero augmentation system is both deep and incredibly fast.
For instance, players can select upgrades—like enhancing Oscar Mike’s agility—faster than they can reload a weapon. This ensures the high-octane pace of a shooter remains uninterrupted, proving that Battleborn has successfully fused strategy with speed.
