Mastering the Galactic War
Helldivers is “helluva” fun, beginning with a well-paced series of tutorials that ensure a smooth learning curve. Before you know it, you are deployed on your first mission in humanity’s endless galactic battle against three distinct alien forces: the Bugs, the Cyborgs, and the Illuminates.
Facing Diverse Alien Threats
Each alien species possesses unique characteristics that require different tactical approaches. The Bugs are plentiful, largely unarmored, and will “zerg” toward you, making shotguns and flamethrowers highly effective. In contrast, the Illuminates utilize advanced technology, while the heavily armored Cyborgs often require armor-piercing weapons to neutralize.
Your Arsenal and Stratagems
This isometric top-down shooter allows you to carry up to three weapons at a time—two primary weapons plus your trusty sidearm for desperate situations. While you start with a standard assault rifle, your armory expands as you complete quests. For instance, higher-level players often favor laser guns for their infinite ammo or flamethrowers for crowd control.
As you progress, you will unlock new weapons, research points, perks, and Stratagems. In Helldivers, Stratagems are tactical assets called down from the sky to aid you on the battlefield. You can summon devastating airstrikes, airdrop heavy weaponry, or even pilot a giant walker to turn the tide of battle.
Co-op Gameplay and Strategy
Since you are limited to five Stratagems per mission, strategic selection is vital. Utility items like jet packs are essential for mobility, while sensor drones help locate valuable research samples used for gear upgrades. You can team up with three friends or match with strangers via the PlayStation Network. However, keep a close watch on your teammates—friendly fire is always active, and a misplaced strike can be just as deadly as the alien swarm.
