Ubisoft’s sixth main installment in the Far Cry series is here. The game was released on October 7, 2021, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Amazon Luna.
Far Cry 6 is set in a fictional Caribbean island Yara, ruled as a dictatorship by “El Presidente” Antón Castillo (portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito) who is raising his son Diego (Anthony Gonzalez) to follow in his rule, the player takes the role of guerilla fighter Dani Rojas (voiced by either Nisa Gunduz or Sean Rey), attempting to topple Castillo and his regime.
GAMEPLAY
Far Cry 6 is an action-adventure first-person shooter game set in an open world environment similar to its predecessors. The players can navigate the fictional island on foot or on vehicles, aircraft, or watercraft. Yara’s island is beautifully designed with urban regions, terrains, water bodies, and dense jungles. The rank level system is similar to recent Assassin’s Creed titles.
The gear and vehicle customization is the best upgrade in the whole series. As the level of the player increases, the enemy forces become more powerful. The firearms are from various scraps and materials with interesting options like a heavy machine gun made from an old car engine and an all-new flamethrower. Each firearm is customizable at workbenches scattered throughout the map.
“Resolver weapons” offer a certain perk to the player’s loadout, for example a silent close-range nail gun or a sling-shot projectile weapon which fires CDs while playing a song. Unlike the previous titles in the series, Far Cry 6 lets the player holster their weapon and blend in while exploring the environment. The all new “Supremo” backpack device with ultimate weapon ability which add more perks to the player’s loadout in order to dominate in combat such as firing homing missiles or seeing through enemies through solid objects.
Further a new notoriety system is added where the enemy caution meter fills depending on the trouble caused. Now something similar to the previous games is the unlocking outposts and towers. Further it also has the Far Cry 5’s companion feature having only recruitable animals with addition of perks. The fishing rod is now customizable with different baits and fishline.
STORY
As the dictator of Yara(fictional island), Antón Castillo is intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory. With his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps. Their ruthless oppression has ignited a revolution.
The players play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran, and become a guerrilla fighter to liberate the nation. Although the story is actually predictable it at the same time keeps me hooked for the rest of the game. The story consists of betrayals and predictable plots which are well written and voice overed.
SOUNDTRACK
The Far Cry 6 team wants to show Latin American culture in both a positive and accurate light. The dialogues are well written with good voice acting. The background score feels the Caribbean and develops the unique and authentic soundtrack of Yara. The firearms and explosions feel lively along with the NPCs and environment sounds in this big map.
GRAPHICS
Far Cry 6 evokes the more lush, jungle terrain of earlier games, while there’s also the return of technologies like fire propagation – its omission much lamented in Far Cry 5. Following Ray traced reflections fare better, offering a good upgrade over standard screen-space reflections.
Immersion is added, especially as the player model is visible in these reflections. Particle effects, screen-space shadows, motion blur and depth of field all run at looks like quarter resolution. Series S seems to spend most of its time in the 1080p-1224p range and while you get 60 frames per second, the presentation is not hugely attractive. Further, the general blurriness in the presentation means hammering down pixel counts for PS5 and Series X. It is challenging but PlayStation 5 renders in the 1728p to 1872p range, while the Microsoft flagship has a higher resolution window, seemingly in the 1872p to full 2160p range.
CONCLUSION
Far Cry 6 is a good-looking game with many of visual upgrades. Moreover it is one of the best game in a while. Further, The most useful upgrade is the gear customization and the diverse vehicle operations which makes the game fun to play. The game is receiving positive responses and we can expect it to be on the charts for some time.
